On 6 September 2026, the Sali-Levi-Haus Visitor Centre at the Old Jewish Cemetery on Judensand was officially opened. From now on, the pavilion and the Old Jewish Cemetery are open to the public. Here you will find all the important information you need for your visit to the Sali-Levi-Haus Visitor Centre and the Old Jewish Cemetery.

Closed on 24–26 December, 1 January and on Jewish holidays (13 September, 20 September, 27 September, 4 October – on 11 September and 25 September only until 2 pm)

Admission

Admission to the Sali-Levi-Haus visitor centre and the cemetery grounds is free.

Important information before your visit

For religious reasons, male visitors to the cemetery – as a sacred place – must always wear head coverings. This does not have to be a kippah; a hat, cap or baseball cap is sufficient. Male visitors are not permitted to enter the cemetery without a head covering.

Please do not stray from the path, thereby respecting the Jewish religious laws regarding the peace of the dead. The designated path takes you right through the newer part of the cemetery. From there, you will have lovely views of the entire site and the graves dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries, and you will see outstanding examples of Jewish burial culture.

However, the Jewish Community of Mainz, as the owner, allows Jewish people who wish to visit their ancestors or pray at specific graves to leave the paths. We
ask for your understanding regarding these regulations.

Dogs are not permitted.

Entry to the grounds is at your own risk.

The cemetery grounds are under video surveillance.

Accessibility

The cemetery is accessible to all visitors. The UNESCO Visitor Centre, the Sali-Levi-Haus, is located outside the cemetery grounds and is only partially accessible. A parking space is reserved for people with walking difficulties, and the centre can be reached via Paul-Denis-Straße.

Information for coach groups

Coaches can access the site. There are drop-off points on Mombacher Straße near the cemetery entrance and above the UNESCO Visitor Centre on Fritz-Kohl-Straße. For visitors with reduced mobility, a bus can be arranged to take them to the visitor centre upon booking with Tourist Info Mainz (please observe the access regulations on site!)

Information for those travelling by car

There is no car park at the Sali-Levi-Haus visitor centre. There are several pay-and-display car parks and multi-storey car parks in the vicinity of the Old Jewish Cemetery.
